Fun Places to Visit in Detroit

Written by Alisa Novelli

Whether you are visiting Detroit for the weekend or you are a Motor City native, there is never a shortage of fun places to check out. With Detroit’s rich history, delicious food scenes, and rockin’ music halls to visit, there is something here for everyone!

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but as a Michigan native myself, I picked my favorite areas to explore whenever I make my way over to Detroit.

Detroit, Michigan

Motown

The music industry as we know it today would not be the same if it was not for Motown. The Temptations, Diana Ross, The Four Tops, the Jackson 5, etc. all got their start at Hitsville U.S.A. If you are a fan of music, history, or both- the museum is definitely worth checking out.

Trivia question: Do you know what Stevie Wonder’s favorite candy bar is? Motown museum has got that answer along with other fun facts to learn about!

Comerica Park

It is the end of February here in Michigan, which means that spring is just around the corner!  Baseball season is about to start. Bring some friends, hot dogs, and beers to Comerica park to watch the Tigers. Detroiters love their sports teams and stand behind them regardless of the outcome of the game. There is nothing quite like watching baseball and its fans at Comerica.

Corktown

If sports and history is not your thing, perhaps Detroit’s food scene will grab your attention. Corktown might be the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, but it is one of the most trendy places to visit. From old time diners like Mercury Burger and Bar restaurant to hip breweries like Slow’s BBQ, your taste buds are sure to be just as entertained as you are in Corktown.

Little Ceasers Arena

One of the newer and quite extensive expansions to Detroit is Little Ceasers Arena. Opening in September of 2017, LCA is the new home of the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Pistons. LCA hosts a number of sports events and some rockin’ concerts. The experience of standing in an arena with 22,000 other screaming fans is unforgettable and totally worth checking out.

Campus Martius

Campus Martius is beautiful to visit anytime of the year. In the winter, it transforms itself into a winter wonderland with a large ice rink to skate on, tree lighting ceremonies to view, and hot-coca stations to visit to warm yourself up.

In the summer, the ice rink disappears and a beach appears! Whether its building sand castles with the family or attending a special food event, there is something for everyone. So bring your beach chairs and sunscreen and kick back and relax in the heart of Detroit.

Detroit Institute of Arts

Last, but certainly not least, your trip to Detroit is not complete without visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts. You do not need to be an art expert to get swept away by what you see. From modern day paintings to Egyptian art dating back to 3,000 B.C.E, there is bound to be something that catches your eye. The D.I.A holds various art shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out their website to see what art exhibit will be on tour when you are there! A personal favorite of mine was viewing Monet’s art.
